A sky packed with kites of all sizes, shapes, designs and colors is a beautiful sight. And some of the best places to fly a kite are Lake Erie’s beaches — try Mentor Headlands almost any weekend.
And although it hasn’t got the publicity of some bigger festivals, the Ohio Society for the Elevation of Kites’ Cleveland Kite Festival, taking place at Edgewater Park, is now in its 47th year. Kite lovers of all ages and experience levels take part in this event, where participants can simply enjoy hefting their kites aloft or take part in competitions such as the Rokkaku Battle where kites try to knock each other out or the sky, or the Mystery Ballet, where kite flyers improvise maneuvers to music they’ve never heard before. There’s also the Wind Sprints, which teaches the basic principles of kite flying.
In addition, there are workshops and special activities to engage families, first-time kite flyers and dedicated hobbyists. Go HERE for more information.
