Sat 6/6
In recent years, home gardeners have become much more aware of native plants. Maybe it has to do with the discussion of invasives and how they impact the ecosystem, crowding out natives that support local fauna and pollinator insects. We’ve seen the arrival in just the past few years of businesses such as Meadow City Native Plants that focus just on those plants intended to grow in this climate. And you’ll find more labeled native plants at local garden centers.
The nonprofit Nature Center at Shaker Lakes, which holds several plant sales throughout the planting season, is holding one this Saturday dedicated to native plants and shrubs homegrown by local gardeners. They’ll have more than 100 varieties, including coneflower, mountain mint, swamp rose, ironweed, honeysuckle and many more. It will be open from 11am-3pm with a special member hour from 10-11am. Admission is free.

And on the same day out in Huron, Mulberry Creek Herb Farm will be holding Native Plant Saturday where natives will share the spotlight with Mulberry Creek’s amazing selection of herbs, succulents, perennials, scented geraniums and vegetable starters. There is also a food truck there every Saturday, and Mulberry Creek’s new wine tasting room is open to relax and enjoy a glass or two. They’re open from 10am to 5pm.
