Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne was Cleveland Mayor Jane Campbell’s Chief of Staff in 2005 when the lower level of the 1917 Detroit Superior Veterans Memorial Bridge was the site for the 2010 & 2011 IngenuityFest, the first sign of life the bridge had seen in decades. Now the County has a planning grant and is engaging the public to tour the former subway and streetcar lower level Fridays June through September to dream about what that unique and signature span could be used for: a green space, an arts space, biking, pedestrian traffic, a music venue, a “lowline,” a park in the sky.

“Ingenuity deserves great credit historically,” says Ronayne, “it kind of ignited people’s passion for this bridge, and it came up with a great civic idea, along with the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative, to say, let’s remake this space. It shouldn’t end with the streetcars that left in 1954, this is something we should animate for the 21st century with art, with music, with lighting.” Ronayne spoke with CoolCleveland’s Thomas Mulready, who was co-founder of Ingenuity, and who is preparing an Ingenuity Archive Project to be presented as a live performance in the Fall of 2026.
