Spring is coming — it really is. The snowdrops and crocuses are blooming and we’ve even seen a few daffodils. And garden centers are slowly coming to life, anticipating planting season.
The means it’s time for our favorite family-owned all-organic herb farm, Mulberry Creek Herb Farm in Huron, to reopen for the season, which happens on Wednesday April 1. And this is no April fool. While they won’t yet have the overwhelming selection of plants they’ll have in a month or so — including dozens of basils and scented geraniums, more than a dozen varieties of mint, thyme, lavender and rosemary and exotic herbs you’ll never see at other garden centers, as well as succulents, flowering perennials, fairy plants and accessories, and very soon, vegetable starters. And when you visit you’ll want to check the refrigerator to see if the hens out back have laid any eggs and pick up a pint of Mitchell’s ice cream (Mulberry Creek supplies them with herbs for flavoring.)
Since 2024, the back of the big retail greenhouses hosts the Mulberry Creek Winery Tasting Room, run by owners Karen and Mark Langan’s son Ben. That’s already open from noon-6pm Wednesday-Saturday, with its hours expanding after the greenhouse formally opens. You’re also welcome to bring a picnic and your pets and hang out in the pavilion or the meadow to enjoy the fresh air, or hang out inside the greenhouse if it’s chilly (and purchase a glass of wine, if you’re so inclined).
Their hours and open days increase with the season, and they host special events throughout the season including their big two-day Mulberry Market (formerly the Herb Fair) June 27-28. Get more information here.
