Much as the video of the police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis 5 1/2 years ago ignited anger and a movement across the country, so too did the shocking footage of a violent ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) officer shooting a peaceful 37-year-old woman, Renee Good, in the head and killing her without cause or provocation — ironically also in Minneapolis, a city known for being peaceful and safe — on Wednesday January 7 ignited protests across the country. Protestors marched in downtown Cleveland Thursday, and on Friday, hundreds gathered in Market Square park across from the West Side Market to express their outrage, listen to speakers and march through the streets of Ohio City bearing homemade signs. As incidents of violence involving ICE escalate (Good isn’t the first person shot or killed without cause by ICE) and as these masked thugs snatch more and more people off the streets without warrants and teargas peaceful protestors, pushback against their extrajudicial activities is likely to increase, along with calls for their defunding or even abolition.
