After an event-packed December, things slow down a little at 78th Street Studios, making it an ideal time to stop in on Third Friday to drop in on your favorite artists when they’re not so harried, and check out some of the ongoing and new shows taking place, as well as check out the guest vendors from Northcoast Promotions in the event spaces.
One new exhibit that sounds intriguing is Power Exchange Rate, opening in Understory at the back of the RAMP level. This group show is described as “exploring intimacy under capitalism.” Power Exchange Rate opens tomorrow at UNDERSTORY. It features both regional and national artists looking at how personal issues are impacted by capitalism and power, viewed through a feminist and queer lens. “The works ask how intimacy becomes negotiated, regulated, and valued in an economic world,” they share.
In gallery 202, artists Christopher Hoots’ Informal Constructs opens. Inspired by music, architecture, and “a plannedrandomness,” and involves vector graphics, digital photo collages, and liquid marbling techniques.” And in gallery 215, Sean Wheeler’s Lefty debuts a series of paintings responding to recent political and cultural events.
Be sure to stop at the Kenneth Paul Lesko on the second floor to check out Melbourne, Australia-based painter/collagist Aubrey Rhodes’ show The Birds, which will be on view through February 14. She says the work “explores the collision between nature and modern life—between instinct and awareness, beauty and distortion. Through hybrid female figures layered with collage and symbolic imagery, the work reflects on identity, culture, and perception in a rapidly shifting world.”
It’s also the last chance to see On The Edge at HEDGE Gallery featuring work by photographer Daniel Levin, sculpture Kenn Hertzel and painter David King.
And there’s more — much more — as there always is on Third Friday. And as always Third Friday is free and open to all including well-behaved kids and dogs.
