Governor Mike DeWine recently proclaimed September 25 to be Dolly Parton Day in Ohio, choosing the day as a reference to her hit “9 to 5.” It showed how much the late country singer, who passed away on August 25 at the age of 80, was loved across political and demographic lines, not only for her music but for her demonstrated generosity and concern for all people. She was also known for her warmth toward fans, spending hours at fan events and meet-and-greets signing autographs and posing for photos
You can celebrate privately by listening to music from her vast catalogue, which began with a singles release when she was 13. In addition to being a singer, she was a gifted songwriter, known for iconic hits such as “My Tennessee Mountain Home,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “I Will Always Love You” and “9 to 5,” all of which she penned by herself, unlike many of today’s generic country hits, written by team of four, five and more writers.
Or you can celebrate at the Rock Hall which will dedicate the day to celebrating Parton. Throughout the museum, you can see footage of her in the Foster Theater, country music artifacts on display, learn Dolly Parton trivia, and hear live music from the Rock Hall house band. And $2 from each ticket will be donated to Cuyahoga County’s Literacy Cooperative, the local partner to Parton’s pet project Imagination Library. The Kids Book Bank will also be collecting donated books at the Rock Hall.
Parton was inducted into the Rock Hall controversially in 2022, with many complaining (as they always do) “That’s not rock & roll!” She herself initially declined the induction for the same reason, although she eventually participated. (Personally, if I were her, I would’ve declined until they inducted the staggeringly influential country pop star Patsy Cline!)
