Ingenuity Festival Is Back to Explore the Diversity of “American Dreams”

Now entering its third decade, Cleveland’s Ingenuity festival still has a lot of surprises in store.

Founded in 2005 by James Levin and Thomas Mulready to experiment with the combustive meeting of art and technology, the original plan was to move the festival around to different underused spaces downtown and activate them. But when the festival moved into its own dedicated space in the Hamilton Collaborative in 2016, it exploded, as artists, performers, and makers, collectively known as Ingeneers, had a dedicated space to work year-round that also provided a stable location for the event.

This year’s theme is “American Dreams,” which is wide open for imagining, especially in these fraught times. You can be assured DEI is NOT banned here!

With a large core of experienced creators, some people move on each year and newcomers show up, adding an element of surprise, discovery and growth. And its footprint has expanded as it’s taken over more and more space inside the huge former industrial building: it sprawls over four floors and copious outdoor spaces, with multiple stations, stages, display and interactive areas. It’s best not to make a tight schedule and just wander, because you’re always going to run into something to distract you.
