 It’s Always Something

What’s next? Maybe check out the WCSB Halloween Ball, still taking place even as their student-run station has been silenced by ideastream. Or some historic photos of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Or the Random Acts of Brightness bike light giveaway by Bike Cleveland. You will be amazed at Chris Webb’s one-man tour de force, The End of Black Excellence at CPT; we caught a preview a while back and were blown away.

And something else: Cle Ballet is doing a new Dracula, while TCO is doing a very old Beethoven’s 9th. Bring the kids to Howls & Owls at CMNH or check out the Garlic Fest. Were you at the No Kings rally? Check out the photos by CoolCleveland’s Anastasia Pantsios in her PHOTOSTREAM, and read the historical perspective by CoolCleveland arts correspondent Bruce Checefsky. And there will be a next time.

ART AND REVOLUTION by BRUCE CHECEFSKY

Something remarkable happened a few days ago. Thousands of people gathered near the Free Stamp in downtown Cleveland to rally against the Trump administration in the No Kings Rally. The Free Stamp is an aluminum and steel work of art by Claes Oldenburg (1929-2022) and Coosje van Bruggen (1942-2009).

For Oldenburg and van Bruggen, Free Stamp reinforced the notion of freedom of expression and freedom from corporate ownership, two ideological positions currently under attack by the Trump administration, making the site for the No Kings relevant. Every year, dozens of protests take place in front of the sculpture for civil rights, fair housing and social equity, making the work of art a significant symbol for those groups willing to express their beliefs publicly.
