Music historian/musician Lenny Kaye is best known for his longtime work with Patti Smith. But in 1972 he put together an album called Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Eta 1965-1969 that collected a bunch of “garage rock” tunes made by unknown local bands, mostly one hit wonders from across the country. Some of the songs have become classics by being covered by many other bands — bands who likely discovered them due to Kaye’s anthology. Kaye assembled a band and a rotating cast of local vocalists to perform the tunes from the album at the Beachland Ballroom. One of those was Dann Klawon who, when he was in the ’60s Mentor, Ohio, band The Choir, wrote “It’s Cold Outside,” a minor 1966-67 hit that appeared on the Nuggets CD box set released in 2023.
