RA Washington co-founded Mourning [A] BLKstar in 2015, and performs lead vox, drum machine, & produces their work. RA sat down for a video call with correspondent, Liv Lewis.
The two discussed the group’s current tour and his thoughts on artistic collaboration, “I believe collaboration is important in life […] everything in society should work that way.” In 2025, as of publication date, tour dates for Mourning [A] BLKstar have been announced in Richmond, VA; The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; Philadelphia, PA; Ridgewood, NY; Holyoke, MA; Kingston, NY; Centre Hall, PA; Ostrava, Czechia; Aachen, Germany; Rotterdam, Netherlands; Hamburg, Germany; Stuttgart, Germany; Konstanz, Germany; and Berlin, Germany.
As for what influences Washington, he cites an apocalyptic American culture, believing that unaddressed atrocities throughout history inevitably lead to collapse, “[This country’s] history hasn’t been acknowledged by the people since the start,”
The musician goes on to specify, “Killing the Native-American, stealing their land, the enslavement of African-American people, disenfranchisement of women and minorities, […] the constant danger that queer and trans folks are facing,”
Mourning [A] Blkstar’s website defines the group as a US-based Afrofuturist collective. Their recent release, Flowers For The Living, is out now.
