Alive & Well

07.19-07.26.23

It takes work to keep a garden alive.

Likewise, it takes a lot of work to keep our culture thriving and our communities strong. Join the Rock Hall and the nonprofit Cleveland Verses as they fight human trafficking in our region with a benefit concert featuring five bands on two stages. We’ll be there; come up and say hi.Ohio Physicians for Reproductive Rights is holding an art auction at the Abattoir Gallery in the Hildebrandt Building to raise money for enshrining reproduction freedom in the Ohio constitution in November. Keeping the spirit alive, catch the debut of the Crones, an all-female Akron group formed by Tracey Thomas of the seminal post-punk band Unit 5.

Ingenuity Cleveland’s monthly Ignite! Neighbor Night returns to the St. Clair Plaza, a new green space, with games, hands-on crafts, music and creative collaboration on this month’s theme: Power of Words: Storytelling, Society Justice & Cultural Power.

Read the COMMENTARY by Anastasia Pantsios here and don’t bother listening to more of Secretary of State Frank LaRose’s lies when he addresses the City Club this week. Instead, VOTE NO on Issue 1 on the August 8 election. Early voting has already started. Request an absentee ballot or vote in person. Only through the hard work of campaigning and voting will we keep our state alive and well.

 COMMENTARY

The Fumble occurred during the 1987 AFC Championship Game between the Cleveland Browns and Denver Broncos on January 17, 1988, at Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colorado. On second down at the Denver eight-yard line, with the Browns needing five yards for a first down, Kosar handed the ball off to Ernest Byner on a trap play. Byner fumbled at the three-yard line with 65 seconds left in the game.

Arts funding in Cuyahoga County hit another snag last month when the Ohio Senate budget, passed by Gov. DeWine, rolled back a recent state law designed to raise more money from the current cigarette tax.

“The Ohio Department of Taxation could not accurately tax vape products according to the bill as written,” said Senate Finance Chair Matt Dolan (R-Chagrin Falls) in a phone conversation with CoolCleveland. Dolan said the vape tax is no longer a viable option. “The locals [in Cuyahoga County] drove this, and you have to ask them why it would not work.”  Read the COMMENTARY by Bruce Checefsky here.

 ARTS

For one sparkling summer day, Detroit Avenue in Lakewood becomes a creative oasis and brings together artists of all disciplines.

Painter Ryan Jaenke, the recipient of a CPAC fellowship, finds inspiration in graffiti art and underground music (pictured above). His Creative Fusion residency has enabled him to split time between large-scale murals and studio work. Returning this year is printmaker, Paul Serrianne, who investigates industrial history in the rustbelt region.  Read more.

 ELECTION

Ohio Secretary of State Frank “Jim Crow” LaRose has raised the ability to speak out of both sides of his mouth to a high art form. He’s the one who earnestly promised us at a public hearing that he cared about drawing fair districts — and then wholehearted voted for lopsided, unconstitutional ones.

He claims he runs elections that are fair, transparent & free of fraud, then backs measures to prevent nonexistent fraud that make it harder to vote. And he insisted August elections were a costly travesty, then led the charge to ban them, which the legislature did earlier this year.

Read the COMMENTARY by Anastasia Pantsios here and don’t bother listening to more of his lies at the City Club on Fri 7/21 and instead VOTE NO on Issue 1 on the August 8 election.

Early voting has already begun. Request an absentee ballot or vote in person. If you need a fuller explanation of Issue 1 and why to VOTE NO, then read more here.

The Summer Market was launched in Avon Lake in 2006 by Erin Stack and Kristen Weeden, who formed a company called Girls Give Back to direct mone to people in need in the community. Its picturesque lakeside location provided a watery vibe. When it returned from the pandemic in 2021, however, it had moved to a new home: Black River Landing in Lorain, where the waterfront is now provided by the river.

It’s still a distinctive market offering some of the feel of the much-loved former Cleveland Flea, with more than 100 mostly local makers, artists and vendors of antiques and collectibles. Food, cocktails, live music and places to sit and hang out replicate that environment as well as does its dog-friendliness. And it’s free. Our writer Claudia Taller tells us all about its 2023 offerings.  Read more.

“Doing what one loves does not come cheap, especially as an arts entrepreneur,” says CoolCleveland’s Thomas Mulready, as quoted this week on Ideastream Public Media. “People sometimes don’t have a vision for themselves beyond their industry,” Mulready said. “So find your passion, and make your passion pay. You’re not withdrawing or retiring, but leaning more into your passion.” Read more.
