Near West Theatre’s Teen Summer Production Is All About High School Rivalries

Fri 7/21-Sun 8/6

The 2011 play, Bring It On: The Musical, is loosely based on the 2000 film of the same name, which depicts the drama of two high school cheerleading teams prepping for a major national competition.

It ran briefly on Broadway but it’s basically lightweight fare ideal for summer and community theater, despite its insanely complicated plot (although probably no more complicated than actual high school social machinations). But it’s got lots of dancing and singing with music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, shortly before he became a Big Deal for writing Hamilton, as well as by composer Tom Kitt and lyricist Amanda Green.

Near West Theatre will be presenting Bring It On: The Musical as their teen summer production, performed by a cast ages 13-19, who can surely relate to the material even if they’re not cheerleaders. NWT warns that “The show contains some profanity.” You know, like every high school clique in the world. Tickets are all pay-what-you-can. Get them here.
