The Cleveland Arts Prize, which has been making monetary awards to people and organizations in all areas of the arts and at all stages of their careers since the early 1960s, is hosting an intriguing fundraising series: behind-the-scenes tours of the art collections of various location institutions and organizations.
Each month, the series, which started in March and runs through August, visits another of the area’s art collections held by an organization that only has a fraction of the works it owns on view at any given time. Each tour will be led by the collection’s curator, who’ll talk about its history, its holdings and more. And each 60-minute tour will feature a work by an area artist who has won the Cleveland Arts Prize, who will join the group to talk about their work. Each evening will include a post-tour wine and cheese reception.
This month the group visits Summa Health, where Meg Harris Stanton, art curator of Summa Health Healing Arts Council, will lead the group. The highlighted winner is 2018 Cleveland Arts Prize winner Darius Stewart, known for his paintings and drawings of black figures, particularly black boys, and his artful placement of these bodies in space. The tour will also spotlight work by Michael Loderstedt and Taryn McMahon.
