Jazz guitarist/composer/educator Dan Bruce spent ten years as part of Chicago’s vibrant jazz scene where he released a couple of albums and performed on many as a sideman before moving to Ohio several years ago.
Since then he’s become an active part of northeast Ohio’s music scene, teaching at Cleveland State University, having his compositions performed by the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, and forming an ensemble called :beta collective to push some musical boundaries. It released its debut album Earthshine in 2017 and followed it up with Time to Mind the Mystics last year.
Bruce calls the latest album “a collection of thought experiments on the intertwined future of humanity and technology” and adds “At the core is the idea that our embrace of technological innovation cannot come at the sacrifice of generational knowledge and ancient wisdom. Our humanity needs to be celebrated, and technology should play a supporting role.”
The current lineup features a bunch of the area’s jazz heavy hitters: drummer Anthony Taddeo, bassist Aidan Plank, vibraphone player Will Wedmedyk, keyboardist Theron Brown, sax players Brad Wagner and Chris Coles, and trombonist Chris Anderson, along with Bruce on guitar, programming and compositions.
They’ll perform for free at Cain Park’s Alma Theater as part of its Tuesday Evening Concert Series, a great opportunity to hear some great local jazz.
