It’s sad but we just aren’t very respectful of our environment. A walk around virtually any outdoor space will yield mountains of discarded fast food wrappers, Styrofoam cups, plastic bags, bottles and worse. This debris often gets swept into storm drains and ends up in the lake, potentially polluting our source of drinking water.
It may seem overwhelming but joining a cleanup really can make a difference. That’s why the Doan Brook Watershed Partnership is hosting a series of Saturday cleanups around its east-side territory.
This week they take place on Sat 4/27 at Rockefeller Park (meet at the Rockfeller Park Lagoon at MLK and E. 105th, across from the tennis courts), and Doan Brook Gorge/Shaker Lakes (meet at the tent at the intersection of Fairhill and E. 127th Street).
You can arrive as early as 12:30 to sign in, where you can get your gloves, trash bags and snacks. Wear sturdy shoes/boots and clothes that cover your legs and arms. Individuals, families and groups of all types — neighbors, scouts, school groups — are welcome. Advance registration is encouraged for large groups.
