Get ready for Summit Metro Parks’ Fall Hiking Spree which kicks off this week, by taking a guided walk with a naturalist at Deep Lock Quarry Metro Park, 5779 Riverview Drive, in Peninsula. They’ll take you down the Quarry Trail and share some of the history of Deep Lock Quarry to whet your appetite to explore more of Summit Metro Parks’ properties.
The area’s past includes indigenous trails, narrow-gauge railroads, hobo jungles and pioneer quarrying. Learn how quarrying for sandstone nearly leveled the forest in the area, now fully regrown and home to animals, birds, insects and plants of all types, with frogs, turtles and salamanders in the old canal bed.
