There’s been a lot of talk in the last few years about undocumented immigrants, often sneeringly referred to as “illegals.” It’s a subject that Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist/filmmaker Jose Antonio Vargas knows a lot about: he is one. He wrote an essay for the New York Times Magazine and wrote, directed and produced a film called Documented about his experience.
He’s also the founder of Define America, a nonprofit organization that works to debunk such negative frames and the executive editor of #EmergingUS, a multimedia news platform that looks at multiculturalism from many angles. He’s also covered such diverse subjects as HIV/AIDS, video game culture and the Virginia Tech mass shooting for publications ranging from Rolling Stone to the Washington Post to the New Yorker.
He’ll speak at Baldwin Wallace University’s Gamble Auditorium as part of its Mark Collier Lecture series. It’s free and open to the public.
