Texas singer/songwriter Buddy Holly wrote tuneful, upbeat pop/rock songs that served as a bridge from ’50s rock to the Beatles. The young Texan was one of a handful of charting artists who actually wrote his own material and his songs, like “Peggy Sue,” “That’ll Be the Day,” “Maybe Baby,” “Words of Love” and “Not Fade Away” have proved timeless. His story was made more poignant — and his legend assured — when he died at the age of 22 in 1958 in an airplane crash.
His huge youthful success and tragic end make a great story, and The Buddy Holly Story became a film in 1978 with Gary Busey in the title role. Since then, it’s also become a perennially popular stage play with its built-in soundtrack of well-known tunes. The touring company of the show will be at Akron’s EJ Thomas Hall for two nights. Tickets are $30-$60.
