Cleveland’s near east side has an Asian flavor. That’s where an increasing number of immigrant have been settling, mostly Chinese but more recently Thai, Korean and Vietnamese as well. That’s also where they’ve been opening businesses creating a district of restaurants and Asian groceries that not only satisfy their own tastes for the homeland, but are an economic draw as people come into AsiaTown looking for a culinary adventure. But you can also find old-fashioned American food, from roast beef sandwiches to soul food.
The area has an arts flavor as well. Many of its big warehouses and former factory buildings, such as the Tower Press Building, are now filled with artists studios. And the area is home to some of the hippest gallery/workshop spaces such as Zygote Press and the Cleveland Print Room.
Community events in AsiaTown that honor the culture include an annual Chinese New Year celebration in late January and the Cleveland Asian Festival the third weekend in May. Regular art openings and periodic open studio walks also draw visitors to the area.
