A lot of the fans that Cleveland metal band Chimaira acquired through more than a decade of heavy touring weren’t too happy when the band recently had an almost total personnel turnover.
Formed in the late ’90s by vocalist Mark Hunter and former guitarist Jason Hager, the band burst on the music scene with their 2000 EP, This Present Darkness.
Hager soon left to pursue other projects, but the lineup soon stabilized and had only a few changes over the next decade as it reliably cranked out an album every two years, toured relentlessly, and became Cleveland’s biggest metal export next to Mushroomhead.
But a mass exodus in 2011 left Hunter the sole remaining member from the lineup that recorded albums like The Impossibility of Reason (2003), Chimaira (2005), Resurrection (2007), and The Infection (2009).
Now Hunter’s backed by five new musicians. The band’s latest album Crown of Phantoms, the first with the new lineup, came out last month. Hunter’s excited and proud, fans are divided, and the band has a lot to prove.
