In April, the Cleveland Museum of Art opened a major show featuring the work of influential American sculptor, organized jointly by CMA and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with close collaboration from the artist. It’s the most significant show of work by the influential artist in a couple of decades. The show, called Martin Puryear: Nexus, follows the artist from his early 1960s work, exploring how his use of form, materials and process evolved. It looks at his influences including the natural world, African American history and material culture traditions from around the world. It includes both new and iconic works, along with prints, drawing and other documentation of outdoor commissions he has created globally. It runs through Sunday August 9, and you should see it.
In addition, if you want to learn more about Puryear, the museum will be screening two short documentaries about his outdoor work, Martin Puryear: Lookout (2023) and Meditation in a Beech Wood (2024). Following the screening, there’ll be a Q&A with Emily Liebert, the museum’s Curator of Contemporary Art. It’s free but tickets are required. Go here to RSVP.
