At Home

This place is home. We lived abroad for a while, as many have. You might mosey out, cross borders, explore the environs. But like us, many of you, even the most well-known and well-travelled, find your way back.

To feather your nest, there’s nothing like locally made, handcrafted furniture like what’s on exhibit at the F*SHO. And taking that impulse a few light years forward, Loren Naji is making his art his home, living in his sculpture (made from other people’s demolished homes) for a month.

So whether it’s Skunkfest in N. Ridgeville, or Content Marketing World down at the Convention Center, or seeing the new mural at Chill Ice Cream in Akron, or putting on your porkpie to hear Joe Lovano and the CJO, or getting on your bike for NEOcycle, or hitting Walkabout Tremont, or visiting wineries a short ride away, the best part of going out is coming home. –Thomas Mulready

Cleveland artist Loren Naji has developed a lot of ambitious projects but none more so than his latest: a large sphere titled “EMOH,” crafted over the past year from pieces of demolished houses in Cleveland. He’s taking the sphere on the road and will live in it for a month to disseminate ideas about homelessness and vacancy.

He’ll start in Detroit, then head to Grand Rapids, where he’ll stay for more than three weeks, to compete for the Grand Rapids ArtPrize. He’s booking more midwestern cities after that, but before he leaves he’s having a send-off party at Prosperity in Tremont. Fri 9/9.

When local furniture crafter Jason Radcliffe started F*SHO in 2009, he didn’t think there were a lot of people in the area designing and handcrafting the sort of distinctive home furnishings he does. He was delighted to find that he was wrong.

Now the annual one-night show, which has been held in a variety of venues, features nearly 40 designers and makers. Radcliffe says that while they produce a range of work, there’s a certain Midwestern feel. John Benson talks to him about the show and his work, which has been purchased by Madonna. Fri 9/9.

James Levin has a genius for transforming neighborhoods with arts and culture.

Creating Cleveland Public Theatre led to his founding the Gordon Square Arts District and triggered one of Cleveland’s coolest areas. Co-founding IngenuityFest at E. 4th, Euclid & Prospect led to a downtown renaissance. Moving it to the Detroit-Superior Bridge drew appreciation to Cleveland’s Near West Side. His One World Day at the Cleveland Cultural Gardens threw the spotlight on one of the region’s most overlooked treasures.

So what’s he doing burning a 38-foot papier-mache fish in Lorain’s Black River? Transforming another neighborhood. The second annual FireFish Festival kicks off at 2pm on Sat 9/17 with a family-friendly street fest along Broadway in Downtown Lorain, climaxing that evening with a ritual incineration of the huge FireFish at Black River Landing.

Maybe dogs and cats are too run-of-the-mill for you, and you’d like to get an exotic pet – such as a skunk. First you need to go Skunkfest in North Ridgeville, meet skunk owners from around the region, and learn what’s involved.

These plump, adorable critters are not taken from the wild; they’re bred to be domestic. And no, they don’t smell. But they ARE a handful! Come see them and meet other rescue groups with cats, dogs and ferrets too. There are games, displays, vendors and fun contests for the skunks and their owners. Sat 9/10.
