Guitarist Alex Skolnick, now 47, laid the foundation for his formidable reputation when he was still a teenager (and a student of Joe Satriaini) and joined the band that became Bay Area speed metal kings Testament. He recorded five albums with them, and toured the world with bands such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Slayer.
He left Testament in 1992 when he was 23 and set about diversifying his musical output. He’d already formed a collaboration with virtuoso bassist Stu Hamm that continues to this day (he performed with the Stu Hamm Trio here at Nighttown late last year). He’s also worked with Primus bassist Les Claypool, did a short stint with power metal band Savatage and earned a BFA in jazz performance from the New School in New York when he was in his early 30s.
In 2002, while at the New School, he founded the Alex Skolnick Trio. That band which continues to this day, is known for jazzing up classic metal and rock tunes. They’ll be at Nighttown with Nathan Peck on bass and Matt Zebroski on drums. Tickets are $20.
