As the Waterloo Arts District seems to finally be enjoying the flourishing that has been growing by fits and starts, the annual Waterloo Arts Fest, now in its 24th year, becomes a bigger and more celebratory event. And it’s more focused on the immediate surrounding community than most neighborhood festivals.
Sprawling over three blocks of Waterloo Road, it features more than 70 local maker and merchant booths offering everything from fine art to honey, cut flowers and house plants, with many of the merchants from the Collinwood area. You’ll also find information booths from organizations promoting environmental stewardship, registering people to vote and encouraging them to listen to college radio: Cleveland State University’s former station WCSB, now XCSB, has its new studio on Waterloo.
There will be eight stages with nearly four dozen bands playing everything from folk and blue to punk and rap. The street’s ten galleries will be open, and its “creativity stations” will be offering hands-on makers opportunities for people of all ages, including special activities for kids. And of course, there’s food, both from the street’s increasing number of restaurants and the food trucks that will be parked there for the day.
The festival is free and open to all.
