The latest in the series of national (and international!) No Kings demonstrations/rallies/marches which started last year had another focus in addition to fighting the corruption and autocratic overreach of the current administration: voting! While the others revolved around things we were angry about, this one was all about what we can do about it before November 3 — early voting was one of the event’s main themes. The gathering at Market Square Park across from the West Side Market featured informations tables from local organizations where you could sign up to be an elections observer get more information about voting hours and what’s on the ballot, or even do a craft project. Tireless organizers Cindy Dempsey of the Cuyahoga Democratic Women’s Caucus, Sue Dean of Mobile the Vote, and Angela Washington led a short program, which featured fired-up speeches by Congresswoman Shontel Brown and Cleveland Ward 8 councilwoman Stephanie Howse Jones.
Then the crowd lined uptown march across the Hope Memorial Bridge and back, waving signs, flags and a baby Trump balloon. As they did so, they passed under a billboard featuring celebrity personal injury lawyer Tim Misny dressed as Uncle Sam and saying “I Want You to Vote!” It was like he was blessing the gathering.
