Cleveland’s No Exit New Music is known for presenting evenings of new and avant-garde music, often including numerous world premieres as well as pieces that influenced today’s avant-garde composers.
But they are also known as presenters, bringing to town musical artists with a mindset similar to their own. One of those will be joining them this week when they bring cimbalon player Chester Englander back to town for a pair of performances. (The cimbalon is a large hammered dulcimer with 125 steel strings.) He has performed with orchestras around the world the world, including The Cleveland Orchestra.
“The cimbalom—traditionally considered a folk instrument —becomes an immensely engaging and altogether unique addition to the avant-garde sound world,” No Exit’s artistic director Timothy Beyer shares. “Chester inhabits such a unique place in the new music world. He has quite literally redefined and reimagined what the instrument can do. I don’t believe there was such a thing as a new music cimbalom player before Chester,” said No Exit’s Artistic Director Timothy Beyer.
The concerts will feature six pieces, composed between the late 70s and 2020. They’ll perform at Praxis Fiber Workshop in the Waterloo Arts District on Friday October 23, and at SPACES in Ohio City’s Hingetown neighborhood on Saturday October 24. No Exit’s concerts are always free and open to all, so you don’t have an excuse for not sampling what they offer.
