When long-running Cleveland State University radio station WCSB-FM was yanked off the air a year ago without warning and handed to Ideastream Public Broadcasting to turn into a mainstream jazz station, a wave of rage rolled through the larger music community. Former and current programmers, listeners and the local and independent musicians the station supported were angry that this essential asset to the local music ecosystem had been torn away.
Luckily the dedicated staff regrouped, restyled itself as XCSB, began broadcasting online and is currently preparing to move into a new studio on Waterloo Road across from the Beachland Ballroom. Dedicated followers have held benefits for the station to help them out. One of those is James Onysko of the local band Drumplay who worked at the station 40 years ago. (The station would’ve celebrated its 50h anniversary this year.)
The Drumplay World Jazz Collective will be doing a benefit concert for XCSB taking place at the Treelawn, also on Waterloo Road. The band will play its distinctive blend of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Middle Eastern Music, filtered through a jazz sensibility, and including a spoken word element to honor the memory and work of former member the Late poet Daniel Thompson.
