Back in 2016, local dynamo Sara Continenza had an idea to build a more just, accessible and health food system. So she created the nonprofit Food Strong, which has done so via a variety of programs including urban gardening, food giveaways and the Care-a-Van medical screenings program.

Those efforts have really ramped up since the three-acre farm on Superior Avenue, founded by Community Green House Partners, which had been fallow for several years, was donated to Food Strong. It cut the ribbon in May 2025, and since then has been hard at work, cleaning, building, planting, harvesting, painting with big plans to turn the farm (and the church building and former parish house on the property) into a hub for health-related projects, organizations and education.

That means raising money, of course. So once again, Food Strong is hosting its annual benefit at Lago Custom Events on the East Bank of the Flats. The Botanical Wonderland Gala is described as “an elegant evening inspired by the whimsical beauty of nature and Alice in Wonderland.” Those attending with get a full dinner, entertainment, the chance to bid on silent auction prizes, and the chance to meet and talk with others who are involved in the food justice project in Cleveland: to expand access to healthy, locally grown food.
