Robert Lockwood Jr was one of Cleveland’s most beloved blues legends. The guitarist/vocalist/songwriter was on March 27, 1915, and joined the Great Migration, moving north to Chicago in 1950, where he became part of that city’s vibrant blues community of the time and performed and/or recorded with legends such as Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Otis Spann.
In the early 60, he moved on to Cleveland where he became the legend and the core of the local blues community with his various lineups of the All Stars spawning some of the area’s other key blues musicians. He was a fixture in bars across the city for the next four and a half decades, performing until a few months before his death in 2006 at the age of 91. There are few area blues musicians who DIDN’T play with him at one point, and more who were influenced by the eclectic style of playing he developed as a result of his diverse background.
The next edition of Roots of American Music’s Masters of American Music series at Visible Voice Books will feature the music of Lockwood and the story of his influence. Three noted local blues musicians — Kristine Jackson, Gene Schwartz and D.C. Carnes — will share Lockwood’s songs and personal stories about their relationships with him, and Lockwood’s son, Roy Lockwood, will be the special guest.
Tickets are $15 at the door. Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Roots of American Music.
