There’s a lot more going on at Lake View Cemetery than burials. Known as a repository of Cleveland history, it’s the final resting place for titans of industrial such as John D. Rockefeller, politicians such as the Stokes Brothers, musicians such as Michael Stanley, inventor Garrett Morgan, writer Harvey Pekar, artists, athletes, socialites and even Alan Freed and Eliot Ness. And it’s the site of the Garfield Memorial, honoring the Ohio-born 20th president, where he and his wife are buried.
It’s also a nature preserve of sorts, and in the summer, the cemetery’s vast natural spaces also provide a backdrop for concerts. This weekend the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, which features many of the area’s most outstanding jazz musicians, young and old, will be performing there, for the Lake View Cemetery Associations Summer Band Concert Series. With composer/trombonist Paul Ferguson at the helm as artistic director, they’ll offer their own spin on American popular song craft.
The concert is free and open to all. Bring your blanket or chair.
