Now 40 years old, Trombone Shorty, born Troy Andrews, certainly plays trombone but he isn’t that short anymore. His nickname came from the fact that he first appeared onstage at the age of 4 and led his own band at the age of 6. But he’s from New Orleans and in New Orleans, music seeps into your bones in the crib. He grew up surrounded by music and musicians, including in his own family, so he could hardly help it.
He found his footing in New Orleans’ unique second lines and Mardi Gras parades (which he still takes part in) but he has since spread his sound all over the world, through extensive touring and more than a dozen albums. Like most New Orleans music, its redolent of the city’s cultural gumbo, which is influenced by Caribbean, Africa, European and Native American cultures: it blended R&B, funk, rock, hip-hop, blues and several varieties of jazz.
He and his band Orleans Avenue are currently on their Let’s Go Get “Em tour, which will bring a taste of New Orleans to Cain Park in Cleveland Heights. Their opening act is Tank & the Bangas, also a multi-genre band from New Orleans band that mixes neo-soul, funk and hip hop with spoken word, provided by vocalist/slam poet Tarriona “Tank” Ball.
