Looking Up

07.20-07.27.22

Take heart.

It’s been tough, but we’re starting to get our mojo back all around the region. BorderLight returns with 140 performances in five days from Public Square to Playhouse Square. The Golden Hour rooftop happy hour showcases Seafair vocalist Chayla Hope. Lorain’s Black River hosts their Summer Market. Akron is the site for the African-American Cultural Festival. The Cuyahoga Falls Night Market lets you eat, drink and shop local makers all night long. WRHS celebrates Euclid Beach Park Days.Don’t let the fun end there. CoolCleveland has collected a whole list of ways to get out and enjoy some of the cool outdoor festivals and events this week, while having fun and changing the world. You can help folks register to vote, educate them on the issues, and make some new friends.

Meanwhile, a dozen attorneys let us know what to expect post-Dobbs, Roe Your Vote rallies voters at Shaker Square, and CoolCleveland offers a strong endorsement of Jeffrey Crossman for attorney general.

If things are starting to look up, it’s only because we are going to make it so.

 NEWS

New Sound for Veteran Vocalist

Back in the mid 2010s, everyone was predicting huge success for local indie rockers Seafair, with their hypnotic layered symphonic sound. That never happened but now vocalist Chayla Hope is going for the gold with a new identity as a glamorous pop diva with beat-heavy, synth-driven tunes. Her debut album comes out later this year, but you can hear her first live solo performance this week at Greyt Culture’s Golden Hour party. Read more

 ENDORSEMENT

Jeffrey Crossman for Ohio Attorney General

It’s clear who won’t protect women’s rights: Current Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost. With reproductive rights in chaos, and confusing messages as to how far anti-choice politicians are willing to go to strip women of control of their bodies and lives, it’s likely a lot of medical decisions will be open to review by prosecutors and attorneys general.

A state’s AG could mean the difference between doctors being criminalized for saving a woman’s life and being able to do so without dread. Yost is willing to lie to bolster his extreme beliefs — he called the existence of the 10-year-old girl forced to go to Indiana for an abortion a “fabrication.” Democratic AG candidate Jeffrey Crossman has promised to do everything he legally can to protect women’s lives & choices. He’s the right choice in November. Read more

 MEMORIAL

Tamir Rice Butterfly Garden Dedicated

The shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice by police while he was playing at the Cudell Rec Center on November 22, 2014 galvanized activists in the Cleveland community and beyond — especially after his killer never stood trial.

Years in the planning, the Tamir Rice Butterfly Garden was dedicated at the Cudell Center Saturday July 16, with speeches by family and friends, gospel  and soul music, the release of doves and butterflies, and the unveiling of a memorial marker. View the PHOTOSTREAM here. Read more
