So-called “gypsy jazz” — the sound created in Paris in the 1930s by musicians such as guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli — has had enduring popularity, spawning numerous “hot club” bands named after the Hot Club of France.
Another of those bands is dubbed Djangophonique, led by guitarist Andrew Brown. Based out of the Ann Arbor area, the relative newcomer to the gypsy jazz scene comprises a core quartet of Brown, rhythm guitarist Zach Croft, clarinetist Tyler Rindo and upright bassist Jorian Olk-Szost, although they often collaborate with other musicians. They released an EP Jazz du Jour in 2020, and followed it up with their debut studio album, Introducing Djangophonique, this year.
This weekend, they’ll be making their second appearance at Lorain County’s Riverdog Barn who warn “This band was a big hit last summer. We suggest you get your reservations in early!”
Tickets are $22; go here to get them. Gates open at 6; you’re welcome to bring a picnic and cooler and hang out.
