The overturning of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Clinic decision, which returned the issue of reproductive rights to be decided by the individual states (at least for now — despite initially reassuring us that this was only about state’s rights, some politicians are now openly talking about a national ban), has created a state of chaos and fear for medical professionals, health care providers and their attorneys, uncertain what the new web of restrictions allows them to do and what it doesn’t.
A free symposium, taking place at Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association Conference Center, 1375 E. 9th Street in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, will address these issues, looking at what the reversal means or Ohio in light of its “trigger law,” the Heartbeat Bill, which bans abortion after six weeks. A court issued a stay, but the Dobbs decision had barely reached the news when Ohio attorney general Dave Yost filed to have the stay lifted.
The first half will talk about legal issues related to medicine, procedures and effective legal representation. The second half will share information for medical and service providers about the new legalities surrounding reproductive rights, with an emphasis on Ohio law as well as laws in surrounding states. A dozen speakers, including attorneys and representatives from abortion providers, will offer their take.
While the symposium is of most interest to attorneys and medical professionals, members of the public looking for factual information about where reproductive rights stand in Ohio are also welcome. It was be livestreamed on Zoom and Facebook as well as take place in person,
