Fits of Hail, who describe their rackety but tuneful music as “that first cup of coffee on a crisp, fall morning,” are a new band in Cleveland’s indie music scene, but the names of the players won’t be unfamiliar to denizens of the scene. Drummer John Kalman, guitarist Mike Reilly, bassist Alan Grandy and vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Chris Anderson have all been making music here for a while.
Grandy’s been around the longest as the driver behind the highly respected Terrible Parade in the late 80s and early 90s, a member of quirky folk-rockers the Jehova Waitresses in the 90s, and a member of the on-again/off-again lo-fi pop trio Sputnik. He also ran his own label Sound of the Sea in the early 90s, which released material by a lot of the players on the then-burgeoning indie folk/rock scene.
Grandy has reactivated the label, now that he’s retired from teaching, and he’s releasing Fits of Hail’s Belmore, a three-song CD EP & 7” vinyl. It’s actually Fits of Hail’s third release; the first two were primarily solo projects by Anderson, the band’s songwriter, before they officially became “a band.”
They’ll debut the new release at a show at the Happy Dog in Gordon Square. Two other local bands, Banging Fragiles and Sleepy Kid, open. Admission is $5.
