Maurice Drake has spent more than four decades as a chef, caterer, baker and evangelist for healthy food. He’s especially become known for his all-natural pea pies, a combo of rice, veggie, black-eyed peas and special spices, wrapped in a grilled flatbread, which he serves under the name Uncle Mo’s Pea Pie Café. His customers at festivals and special events have come to eagerly anticipate them.
It’s the kind of food — and attitude — that’s perfect for a food truck, and Drake is now preparing to take his act on the road to serve sandwiches, soups and salads, as well as dishes like black beans rice, made from fresh, organic ingredients at even a wider range of events. He’s planning to have plenty of vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free selections as well.
He was gifted with a truck from a friend who thought it would be perfect for a vegetarian food truck. That friend, Steve Moore, passed away last year, but Drake is forging ahead to raise funds to properly outfit the truck. You can check out his Indiegogo campaign, or you can get more up close and personal: he’s hosting his Uncle Mo’s Pea Pie Café food truck benefit at the Kent Stage this week. That avatar of positive vibrations, Carlos Jones, and his P.L.U.S. Band, will play their sunny reggae, and Kent folksinger/educator Hal Walker will delight the audience with his original tunes and his array of unusual instruments.
Tickets are $15; $5 for those under 12. Yes, it’s a family-friendly show, and we’re just guessing, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Drake had some pea pies on the premises available for sale.
