Absinthe, a herbal alcoholic drink once believed to be hallucinogenic, has lost some of its mystique since it was legalized and became widely available in the last 20 years, revealing it to be no more dangerous than the average alcoholic beverage.
But in the late 19th-century and early 20th-century France — a golden age of creative artists, musicians, writers and other Bohemian types — it was wildly popular and associated with the sort of debauched lifestyle many of them led. Poets like Arthur Rimbaud and Charles Baudelaire, writers like Edgar Allan Poe and Oscar Wilde and painters like Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh were all known to indulge.
So — any excuse for an absinthe party: Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853. So the Wine Spot in Cleveland is celebrating. They’re inviting you to dress up in the fashion of late 19th century Paris, bring friends, and come down and have a drink. Absinthe, of course. The party goes on from 6-10pm.
