For decades, one of Cleveland’s proudest claims to musical fame was bluesman Robert Lockwood Jr., widely considered to be one of the genre’s most important players. And he had a long time to make an impact, dying a little less than a decade ago at the age of 91 — and continuing to perform until shortly before his death.

Most of the area’s top blues players performed with him at one point and some of those will be getting together at the Beachland Ballroom to celebrate what would have been his 101^st birthday on March 27. His band, the Robert Lockwood Jr All-Stars, will take the stage, along with the Wallace Coleman Group fronted by his longtime harmonica player doing a special Robert Johnson set (Johnson was allegedly the one who got Lockwood started with the blues).

Also performing: Travis “Moonchild” Haddix, Colin Dussault, the Schwartz Brothers, Crazy Marvin, Blue Lunch’s Bob Frank, Robert Kidney of the Numbers Band, Pete Cavano and Charlie Christopherson. The event is free.
