The seven-year-old, Massachusetts-based vocal group Roomful of Teeth is constantly pushing the limits of what human voices can do. They explore singing techniques from around the world including yodeling, belting, Tuvan and Inuit throat singing, Persian classical singing, chant and Korean p’ansori. And in order to make use of all of that, their repertoire consists largely of newly commissioned pieces as well as compositions by group founder Brad Wells.
The group’s self-titled 2012 debut was nominated for three Grammys and won one in the Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. And that year, ensemble member Caroline Shaw Caroline Shaw won the Pulitzer Prize in Music for Partita for 8 Voices, which appears on that album. The group’s second record, Render, was released last April.
Expect to hear some thrilling and different sounds when Roomful of Teeth performs at the Akron-Summit Library. Tickets are $25 and include light refreshments.
