Saxophone isn’t an instrument you usually find onstage at a classical music concert. But it’s a familiar instrument to jazz and rock fans, and the CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra has a mission to bridge the gap between classical music and those who aren’t necessary into it yet.
So it’s not a big surprise that their upcoming program, which they’ll take around to different northeast Ohio neighborhoods as usual, features a saxophone concerto, composed by the group’s music director Avner Dorman, who’ll be conducting.
The soloist is Timothy McAllister, an internationally noted star of classical saxophone, who has performed with major orchestras around the world and premiered over 150 new works by contemporary composers, almost a necessity given the paucity of saxophone music in the standard classical repertoire.
The program will open with something a tad more traditional: Mozart’s Symphony No. 35, and also include Dvořák’s Wind Serenade and Haydn’s Symphony No. 45.
Performances take place at Lakewood Congregational Church of Wed 10/15, the Slovenian National Home in the St. Clair Superior neighborhood on Thu 10/16, St. Noel Church in Willoughby Hills on Fri 10/17, the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus in Slavic Village on Sat 10/18, and the Church of Gesu in University Heights on Sun 10/19.
Concerts by CityMusic Cleveland are always free and no reservations are needed. Just come on by.
