The next show at printmaking nonprofit Zygote Press is called A Clearing: Word, Image, Body. It’s a tribute and response to one of America’s most important writers, Lorain, Ohio’s Toni Morrison (1931-2019)
The works in the show, they explain, “explore identity, memory, and ancestry; Black selfhood and autonomy; liberation from societal norms and values; beauty and love; and sexual violence and trauma.” All of those were important themes in Morrison’s work. Artists in the show include Tatyana Atkinson, Marcus Morris, Euzhan Shabaz (whose inkjet print on archival paper is seen above), Benjamin Smith and solo, each taking off from Morrison’s work and interpreting it in their own way through photography, printmaking, sound, installation, digital collage and illustration, and social practice. The multi-disciplinary artists were chosen by a juried process open to artists from all over Ohio, in all artistic disciplines but favoring printmaking.
The exhibit is part of the programming for Ohio Celebrates Toni Morrison, a yearlong celebration of Morrison and her work.
The opening reception is free and open to all. The show will be on view through October 23.
