It’s high season for church festivals, and this weekend, you can hit the Hungarian Festival of the Feast of St. Stephen, the first king of Hungary, taking place at St. Emeric Church Parish Grounds in Ohio City (behind the West Side Market).
It kicks off with a solemn mass in Hungarian at 11am — and then you party. That #1 attraction at all church festivals — the food — will be served from noon-4pm: goulash, stuffed cabbage, sausage, strudel and more — even a couple of vegetarian dishes that sound really good: a tomato, pepper and onion stew, and a cabbage and noodles dish.
At 1pm there’s the tradition blessing and tasting of the “new bread” and at 2pm there’ll be folk dancing by the folk ensemble Regos. There’ll be live music, a bazaar and kids’ activities all afternoon, and a church tour at 2:45. And there’s free parking in the West Side Market parking lot.
