CoolCleveland’s Thomas Mulready met up with Allison Russo when she appeared at Lakewood Public Library to speak at a meeting of the Lakewood Democratic Club. A doctor with 20 years experience in public health, she was inspired to run for public office after the 2016 Presidential election, and became the first Democrat in a decade to flip a Central Ohio seat in the state legislature. She has served as Minority Leader of the Ohio House of Representatives and co-sponsored dozens of bills signed into law.

She is committed to being an advocate for voters but points out, “What we’ve had is a Secretary of State that has worked against voters and with a legislative majority, the Republicans, that have been hostile to voters.” She is concerned about SB293, signed into law by the governor recently, which removed the grace period for mail-in ballots and in the case of minor errors, forces voters to enter a provisional ballot, “and if they cannot prove with their paperwork that it was an error and they are who they say they are, and they are in fact eligible voters, their voter registration gets cancelled.”
