Each year, Case Western Reserve University has a convocation honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with a speaker who addresses some aspect of social justice and human rights. In the past they’ve included people such as visual artist LaToya Ruby Frazier and Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett. It’s the culmination of a series of activities honoring King’s legacy.
This year’s moderated conversation will feature Anthony Jack, the Inaugural Faculty Director of the Newbury Center and Associate Professor of Higher Education Leadership at Boston University. His research revolves around the college performance differences in lower-income students: those who come from under-resourced local public high schools and those who attending boarding and private prep schools. His research has been published in both academic journals and mass-market outlets including the New York Times, The New Yorker, the Boston Globe, Huffington Post and The Atlantic. He has also gathered his research into a pair of books: The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges Are Failing Disadvantaged Students (2019) and Class Dismissed: When Colleges Ignore Inequality and Students Pay the Price(2024).
The event takes place in the ballroom at CWRU’s Tinkham Veale Center. It’s followed by a dessert reception and book signing.The event is free and open to all but reservations are required. Go here.
