Right now, there’s a public debate going on over our clear First Amendment rights. It’s not the first time in our history, that free speech has been under fire, but the issues swirling around it — particularly the attempts to silence one side after their years of specious complaints about “cancel culture” — have rarely been more contentious. And when you throw in massive, consolidated media companies focused on their bottom line that are sensitive to government pressure, you have a situation ripe for silencing some viewpoints, something that has already happened. Trying to silence people for criticizing rabblerouser Charlie Kirk’s hateful, even violent, remarks just because he was killed is not only coming from the far right, but also people who are just timid and scared.
A panel of First Amendment experts will talk about the issues in the spotlight to at “The Happy Dog Tales on the State of Free Speech,” one of the periodic discussions taking place at the Happy Dog in Gordon Square, co-sponsored by the City Club. They’ll chew over questions, such as “Is free speech under attack? Or is the public’s definition shifting? And what can we take stock of from current events, as well as long-term trends in this nation and our ability to exercise our First Amendment rights?”
Panelists include Andy Geronimo at Case Western Reserve University’s First Amendment Clinic, and Peter Koritansky with the Cleveland State University Center for Civics, Culture, and Society.
