Local attorney/activist Gary Benjamin was raised in a Christian family and experienced the Jim Crow South from 1959 to 1963 when the Civil Rights movement was gaining momentum and public attention and became profoundly aware of injustice in the U.S.
He became an anti-racist ally working for change in the Chicago and Detroit areas, for universal health care, for fairer lending practices for the Black community in Cleveland and for a more equitable government structure in Southeast Michigan. He and his wife spearheaded a successful and widely recognized effort to get a Haitian refugee released from detention and integrated into the community, to bring his family to Cleveland, and then, when Trump returned to office, to help arrange for their emigration into Canada.
He tells the story of his background, his road to activism and the many causes he’s worked for in a new book called A Journey Toward Justice: Becoming an Ally in the Struggle for Civil Rights. It’s available in local bookstores include Hexagon Books in Cleveland Heights where he’ll be hosting a book signing/launch party on Friday September 19. They’ll have books for sale to get signed.
