PHOTOSTREAM: A Rainy Trip to Put-in-Bay by Anastasia Pantsios

What do you do when rain was forecast on the day you planned your trip to put in bay? You go anyway! Getting on the ferry at the Miller boat dock in Catawba, there was a black and white goldendoodle in a yellow slicker. That was a good sign.

The trip in the water taxi to The OSU Ohio Sea Lab’s Stone Lab on Gibraltat island off put in bay was damp, and our guides gave us a longer than usual presentation inside (We got to hold snakes!) as wind lashed rain against the windows. We finally made a dash for the Cooke Mansion, built on the island in the late 1800s by Jay Cooke, a wealthy friend of presidents who helped fund the Union army in the Civil War.

By the time we returned to Put-in-Bay in the water taxi, the rain was tapering off. But a trip to the beautiful Butterfly House at Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center proved so muggy that lenses fogged over, and it was impossible to get many good photos.

The rain also left the trails at the Scheeff Nature Preserve and Massey Cliffs muddy but the scenery was worth the trek. A Sunday at Sweet Siblings downtown was the perfect end to the day.

Taking the last Miller Ferry back to the mainland at 9pm on one of the longest days of the year provided passengers spectacular views of thesetting sun.
