Pianist Jean-Yves Thibadault Steps in to Play Gershwin with the Cleveland Orchestra

Thu 4/18 and Fri 4/19 @ 7:30PM

Sat 4/20 @ 8PM

Young pianist Yuja Wang was scheduled to perform with the Cleveland Orchestra this weekend. However, she has withdrawn from the concert so French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet will be making a return visit to northeast Ohio to perform with the orchestra. Last summer, he played music by George Gershwin at Blossom Music Center, and he’ll again be taking on Gershwin at Severance Music Center where he joins the orchestra for his Concerto in F, which debuted in 1925.

The program also includes Darius Milhaud’s Le Boeuf sur le toit, described in the orchestra’s blurb as “cheeky” —with a name that means “the Ox on the Roof” and was originally intended to accompany a Charlie Chaplin silent film, what else could it be? — and Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. With the Milhaud piece written in 1919-20 and Stravinsky’s in 1913, all three pieces on the program come from a period of just over a decade.

Once again, Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä who at 28 is less than half Thibaudet’s 62 years, will be on the podium. Get tickets here.
