Movies at Home Takes a Look at 1972 Musical “Cabaret”

Thu 6/1 @ 7PM

Unlike some of the obscure movie musicals that The Musical Theater Project’s Bill Rudman picks for his monthly Movies at Home discussion series, the 1972 film Cabaret, based on the 1966 John Kander/Fred Ebb Broadway hit musical, isn’t obscure. It propelled 26-year-old Liza Minnelli to stardom and an all-access pass to Studio 54 and turbocharged director/choreographer Bob Fosse’s career.

Its source material hardly seems destined for a hit Broadway show: it was based a play based on a 1939 novel by author Christopher Isherwood about his years in Berlin immediately prior to Hitler’s rise to power when its society was deteriorating, as poverty and political divisions engulfed it. Isherwood fled just before Hitler came to power and closed the cabarets he frequented whose decadent, anything-goes lifestyle infuses the musical.

As usual, Rudman has recorded an introduction to the film to alert you to things to watch for. Then watch the film, available for rental or purchase on Amazon Prime. Then join him on Zoom on Thursday June 1 @ 7pm to talk about it. It’s free and open to all. Here’s the link.
